Injury of the oral mucosa


The oral mucosa is made up of a rapidly proliferating and continually renewing sheet of epithelial cells which serve a number of specialised functions, including acting as a barrier between the host and the potentially hostile oral environment.5

Injury of the oral mucosa is a relatively common finding in dental practice which can result from physical, chemical or thermal trauma. Such injuries can originate from accidental dental biting, sharp or pointing food stuff, sharp edges of teeth or overzealous tooth brushing. Additionally, injury to the oral mucosa can result from iatrogenic damage during treatment (for example, oral surgery), or other procedures involving the oral cavity, for example intubation during general anaesthesia.1


Oral surgery involves the diagnosis and management of pathology of the mouth and jaws that requires surgical intervention. Oral surgery can involve the treatment of children and adults, and also the management of dentally anxious and medically complex patients.6
Periodontal diseases consist of a group of related conditions, acute or chronic in nature,7 which effect the structures that support your teeth, such as gums, membranes and bones.8 Periodontal diseases are characterised by inflammation of the periodontal tissues in response to the presence of dental plaque.7

Aminogam® Gel provides a protective action, promoting fast healing of ulcerative and erosive lesions, and oral wounds.2

Oral surgery (protection of surgical and suture wounds), extractive surgery (regeneration of the alveolous and prevention of post-extractive alveolitis), regenerative, periodontal and implant surgery, pre-prosthetic and orthodontal surgery, major and minor laser surgery, orthodontic and prosthetic traumatic situations, protection of vital tooth stumps in patients with fixed prosthesis or with dental hypersensitivity and ulcerous boils of the oral mucous (auto-immune, vasculitic and infective).2

Aminogam® Spray aids the process of tissue regeneration, favouring rapid recovery to areas of injury along with simultaneous reduction in pain.

Aminogam® Spray exerts a protective nature, stimulating fibroblast growth and facilitating the physiological re-epithelialisation of the injured area. The spray formulation allows for easy application, even in the most difficult to reach areas of the mouth.3

Aminogam® Spray is indicated for use with: oral surgery (protection of surgical wounds and sutures), extraction surgery (alveolus and prevention of post-extractive alveolitis), regenerative, periodontal and implant surgery, pre-prosthetic and orthodontic surgery, major and minor laser surgery, orthodontic and prosthetic trauma, protection of vital stumps in patients with fixed prosthesis and dentinal hypersensitivity, erosive and ulcerative lesions of the oral mucosa of various aetiologies (mouth ulcers, ulcerative-bullous lesions like pemphigus etc).3
Aminogam® Mouthwash

Aminogam® Mouthwash facilitates the oral tissue regeneration process, promoting the physiological re-epithelialisation of injured areas. It exerts a protective nature, favouring the fast recovery of areas of injury and simultaneous reduction in pain.4

Aminogam® Mouthwash is indicated for use with: glossitis, gingivitis, gingivitis by mechanical irritation from dentures, burning mouth syndrome, states of irritation of the oral mucosa, chronic inflammations, gingival and tooth sensitivity reduction after curettage and protection of surgical wounds in dentistry.4

Aminogam® products contain sodium hyaluronate amino acids.2,3,4

Sodium hyaluronate

Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a key component of connective tissue and promotes tissue repair. Its use has also been reported in dentistry to exert an anti-inflammatory effect and to control gingival bleeding.16 Hyaluronic acid has been shown to promote cell proliferation, differentiation and motility.13

Amino Acids

The amino acids present in Aminogam® are intended to promote the formation of collagen.3,4 The availability of amino acids, such as those present in Aminogam® , is necessary in wound repair due to increased metabolic activity.13,17 The four amino acids present in Aminogam® favour wound healing by collagenogenesis and extracellular matrix (ECM) formation.17

What effect does
Aminogam® have on oral wound healing?

Aminogam® accelerates wound healing, promotes angiogenesis and the release of VEGF by fibroblasts, and therefore may be successfully used in treatment of several oral pathological conditions in which accelerated repair of the surgical solution is of benefit for the patient.13


Aminogam® has been shown to be inexpensive, biocompatible, safe and useful in all oral surgical procedures in order to decrease postoperative pain, obtain reduced swelling, and faster healing of both hard and soft tissues (without infective complications) due to mechanical protection of the surgical wound.14

The use of Aminogam® has not been associated with any adverse effects.15
